There is a term used in the Human Development field called a schema. This is most easily defined as your own understanding of a concept or object. The idea is that a child who is shown what a kitty is will call everything a kitty that has four legs and fur until they are told that there are also dogs, tigers...they will then expand their schema of a kitty by adding that a kitty has whiskers, is small, and meows. This will allow them to differentiate between types of animals. A schema will always start out to be the most simplistic and basic definition of the subject. So, when you think about God and who He is your understanding is based on only the information that you have read, felt, or been told. You don’t know what you don’t know.
Maybe you have turned away from God lately because you are disappointed by something you thought God should have done but didn’t. Or maybe you are living your Christian walk, but you are missing an aspect of God that might affect how you treat others or who you say God is. I wholeheartedly believe that God is too complex for our human understanding to fully grasp, but I also believe that God wants us to try to get to know Him better. This is why we have the Bible; God left glimpses of His nature in the Bible for us to study and learn about who He is. We can learn about His disappointment with the world that led to the flood, His immeasurable love that He would send His only son to die for our sins, or His ability to forgive and save the women caught in adultery in the book of John.
Bellow I have shared
some verses I have found pointing to who God is, but these only scratch the
surface. Have you taken the time lately to get to know your God? If not, I
encourage you to search for Him in the Bible and through prayer. Don’t be like a naïve child, seek to always expand your schema.
1 john 1:5
This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is
light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
1 John 4:8-9 Anyone
who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of
God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only son into the world, so
that we might live through him.
Isaiah 40:28
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the
creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; His
understanding is unsearchable.
John 3:16 For
God so loved the world that He gave His only son, that whoever believes in Him
shall not perish but have everlasting life.
Micah 7:18-19
Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for
the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because
he delights in steadfast love. He will again have compassion on us; he will
tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of
the sea.
1 Corinthians
10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is
faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the
temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to
endure it.
